Bourbon and Bardstown: A Love Story in More Ways Than One

As I reflect on my family's legacy, I'm reminded of the deep-rooted connections we have to the bourbon industry, intertwined with tales of love, resilience, and heritage.

It all began in Bardstown, of course.

Not only is Bardstown the beating heart of Kentucky's bourbon country, it’s where my mother’s parents' love story unfolded, against the backdrop of Barton Distilling. My grandmother was a secretary for Frank Kraus, the esteemed Plant Manager at Barton.

My grandfather was the manager of the labeling department, his craftsmanship adding the finishing touch to each exquisite creation.
Here's a cherished glimpse of their wedding day, captured alongside Frank and his wife Norma, and Paul Kraus, Frank's brother. Both Paul and Frank were esteemed figures at Barton Distilling, embodying the essence of craftsmanship and dedication that defined the industry.

In the years that followed, Frank's journey led him to Lake Forrest, IL, where he ascended to the role of Vice President at Jim Beam Distilling, a testament to his passion and leadership. Meanwhile, Paul ventured to Chicago, where he served as Chief Operating Officer for Barton Brands, ensuring the legacy of quality and tradition endured.

The Kraus family, third-generation distillers hailing from Austria, carried with them a legacy steeped in craftsmanship and tradition.

Yet, amidst their success, tragedy struck with unfathomable cruelty. The horrors of Auschwitz claimed the lives of their parents and, tragically, a younger brother.

Paul's bravery extended beyond the confines of the distillery walls. Serving in the US Army, he was thrust back into the heart of battle on the European front, where his courage knew no bounds. In a remarkable twist of fate, he played a pivotal role in history by apprehending Otto Skorzeny, one of Hitler's most notorious officers.

As I reflect on these intertwined tales of love, loss, and triumph, I'm reminded of the enduring spirit that defines not only my family, but many families who have been tied to Bardstown at one point.

Our ties to Bardstown, bourbon, and each other are woven into the fabric of who we are, a testament to the legacy passed down through generations.

In honoring our past, we pave the way for a future fueled by passion, purpose, and a profound appreciation for the journey that brought us here.
